Automatic Power On

$

I have a HyperVisor setup running ESXI 6.0.  For the VMs I have setup on it, I have each one setup under Actions - Autostart set to enabled with a Start Delay / Stop Delay of 120 Seconds and the Wait for Heartbeat set to System Default.

The other day my host got accidentally powered off...when it came back on and VMWare came back up, none of the VMs powered on once the system was up.

Am I doing something wrong?  Do I need something else in place to get this working?  I dont have a VCenter Server running right now as I Could setup group on there with auto power on settings, but that would require the VCEnter Server to power on automatically anyway after the host goes down / reboots...

IP address (virtual?) for 4 VMs -- virtual MACs?

Hello,

I have a basic Hypervisor setup with 4 VMs.  The VMs show up in the ESXi interface with the hardware NIC and its physical MAC, but they are not broadcasting (port 53) to receive a virtual LAN IP from my DHCP server.

How do I make the VMs ask for an IP address?

Do I need to create virtual MACs also (so the traffic will know which VM should receive the virtual IP and subsequent traffic)?

thanks

Download size unknown in OVF deployment wizard

Hi,

I am deploying a VM using OVF template in vCenter [vSphere Client version 6.5.0.13000]. The OVF and VMDK(~12GB) are on my local machine. I have a couple of queries in the OVF deployment wizard:

  1. What does Download Size mean?

     a. Is it the VMDK size? But then why is VMDK size populated?

     b. Is it download size over the network if I provide an OVF URL instead of selecting a local file?  [Tried that too. still, it is Unknown]

     c. Is it because the VMDK size is too large and there is some sort of internal timeout to compute and fetch the size of the VMDK from the browser? [Tried a smaller VMDK though, still, it was Unknown]

     2. Why is thin provision size not known prior to installation? Thick provision is known from the OVF file configuration itself. It is too early to say anything about how much size it will actually take?

Please spread some light on this.

Attaching a screenshot for reference. Please let me know if any more information is needed.

VM CONVERSION

Dear All,

I have a case where we need to convert a physical server to virtual machine. The host destination is an vmware ESXi 6.7 environment (managed by VCSA 6.7)

The Server OS is a Debian 9.

I have tryed with the Standalone vCenter Converter with almost all possible versions, all result where unsuccefull.

My question: It is possible to do it by another way? Specifically, can I setup (add an existing disk) using the VM with the .RAW file format?

I hope you can enlighten me with your knowledge.

Regards.-

I have downloaded the VMWare vSphere Hypervisor and put it on a USB. When I try to boot from it on multiple machines I get an error "An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system". Can anyone give me some ideas of what I'm doing wrong?

Hello Everyone,

I just brought a Dell T5500 workstation and need to learn Vmware and other products.

I found that it can not be used with VMware Esxi 6.7 latest update, But i am curious about how many esxi host can be create within my workstation.

Specs:  Dual Xeon X6550 2.00 GHz, 2TB (4 x 500gb ), 36GB(4GB x 9 stick).

Any assistance would be appreciated.

We would like to use direct access to GPUs Nvidia Tesla P100 & V100 under Linux VMs that are hosting on VMWare ESXi 6.0 & 6.5 hosts.

Which VMWare licenses do we need in order to enable this feature?

Unexpected VM crash

Hi,

We have an ESXi 6.5.0 (Build 5310538) on HPE BL460c Gen9, using 3PAR as storage.

During the last few weeks, few of the VMs went down and eventually vSphere logged the following message:

Error message on VM on HOSTin ha-datacenter: We will respond on the basis of your support entitlement.

An application (/bin/vmx) running on ESXi host has crashed (3 time(s) so far). A core file might have been created at..

From the topic here, I observed that it may be due to system messages in the core ZDUMP files, so I have attached the ZDUMP files of the latest 2 incidents.

May someone check the ZDUMP files and provide a bit more information and suggestions how can we prevent ourselves from falling into such situations again, please?

Thank Y'All in advance!

Best,
Tony

Difference between SR-IOV and DirectPath I/O

$

Hello,

I am testing some pass-through features in order to better the network latency of a virtual machine, those features being DirectPath I/O and SR-IOV (As per the whitepapper http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/latency-sensitive-perf-vsphere55.pdf)

The difference between both of them is quite unclear for me, when reading at VMware vSphere 5.1 it says :

SR-IOV offers performance benefits and tradeoffs similar to those of DirectPath I/O. DirectPath I/O and SR-IOV have similar functionalty but you use them to accomplish different things.

SR-IOV is beneficial in workloads with very high packet rates or very low latency requirements. Like DirectPath I/O, SR-IOV is not compatible with certain core virtualization features, such as vMotion. SR-IOV does, however, allow for a single physical device to be shared amongst multiple guests.

With DirectPath I/O you can map only one physical funtion to one virtual machine. SR-IOV lets you share a single physical device, allowing multiple virtual machines to connect directly to the physical funtion.

I have the impression that both allows you to achieve the same goal (i.e. having the devices mounted directly inside the guest OS by bypassing the kernel layer), however that SR-IOV allows multiple VMs to share the same physical device where DirectPath I/O allows only one VM to use the PCI device.

Am I correct?

Is there a difference in terms of performance between both features?

When should I use DP IO rather than SR-IOV?

Thanks,

Sevan

vSphere 5.5 - Boot Menu - Scripted vsphere Installer

$

Sigh...  for support reasons of a software vendor I have to maintain a 5.5u2 cluster.

Trying to stage for class / POC environment (hyperconvergence so has to work on hardware level), so I have to handle hardware

Goal:

1) Use kickstart structure answer files to load the nodes

2) Create a boot menu from vSphere 5.5u2 (oem customized versions) to allow user to boot USB image over IPMI, select node they are on, and it feeds it the correct ks.cfg file

I followed various guides / notes:

vSphere Boot Menu Guides

https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2004582

Template attached but details for fields and assumptions below.

Create menu for the list of nodes to each customization answer file

Documentation:

http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2015/06/how-to-create-custom-esxi-boot-menu-to-support-multiple-kickstart-files.html

http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2011/07/automating-esxi-5x-kickstart-tips.html

But either it is a translation issue of my understanding of their notes, or issue with 5.5u2 or ???

###

Step 1:  Create bootable USB vSphere OS key on 2GB key

I named key label "esx5U2_auto_install"

I followed instructions and used tool rufus

https://tinkertry.com/rufus-takes-2-minutes-to-create-a-bootable-usb-flash-drive-for-esxi-installation

I connected and used OEM vSphere cutomization ISO for vSphere 5.5u2

Step 2:  Create answer file response files

Example is node 1-4 cluster.

on USB create directory "KS" and in that create files  "NODE1.cfg" -"NODE4.cfg"

Example file for node1

node1 ks.cfg

# Accept vSphere license ULA

vmaccepteula

# Set root password

rootpw password

# Clear drive partition on first device in device list

clearpart --firstdisk --overwritevmfs

# Set installation target to be first drive it finds in device list

install --firstdisk --overwritevmfs

# Set static IP for vmnic0 per Spectrum Accelerate table

network --bootproto=static --device=vmnic0 --ip=172.20.11.197 --netmask=255.255.255.0 --gateway=172.20.11.1 --hostname=node1 -- nameserver=172.20.12.100,172.20.13.100 vlanid=11

# Reboot host

reboot

# Post Installation goodies

# Enable SSH and Tech Suport modes

vim-cmd hostsvc/enable_esx_shell

vim-cmd hostsvc/start_esx_shell

vim-cmd hostsvc/enable_ssh

vim-cmd hostsvc/start_ssh

esxcli network firewall ruleset set --ruleset-id sshClient --enabled yes

Step 3: Create menu for nodes

Edit file "isolinux.cfg" for above host menu options.  Save this file in root of USB key.

Design is to boot over USB attached drive through the IMM (or local attached USB)

DEFAULT menu.c32

MENU TITLE 5.5u2 Boot Menu

NOHALT 1

PROMPT 0

TIMEOUT 80

#

LABEL hddboot

  LOCALBOOT 0x80

MENU LABEL ^Boot from local disk

#

LABEL IBM Spectrum Accelerate Node 1 Install

  KERNEL mboot.c32

  APPEND -c boot.cfg ks=usb:/KS/NODE1.cfg +++

  MENU LABEL ^1 Node1 Install

#

LABEL IBM Spectrum Accelerate Node 2 Install

  KERNEL mboot.c32

  APPEND -c boot.cfg ks=usb:/KS/NODE2.CFG +++

  MENU LABEL ^2 Node2 Install

#

LABEL IBM Spectrum Accelerate Node 3 Install

  KERNEL mboot.c32

  APPEND -c boot.cfg ks=usb:/KS/NODE3.CFG +++

  MENU LABEL ^3 Node3 Install

#

#############

But...  When I boot it just runs normal script to install vSphere from basic answer file

What I think I am missing is what do I need to do to the boot.cfg file to get it to call the menu (DEFAULT menu.c32)

As usual, all help is appreciated.

PS: I also tried to just effect the base load for just test of answer file (aka without fancy menu) by modification of "boot.cfg" as noted below...and it booted normal installer and ignored answers

boot.cfg  - node 1 direct ks.cfg call

Reducing the physical size of vmdk

$

Dear All,

I would like to ask is there any substitution method instead of migrating / copying vm in the freeware hypervisor, which can reduce the phycical size of the vmdk?

I try to follow the reducing size recipe for a windows guest (sdelete, shrink partition, recalculate the RW disk size in the vmdk file) but the last step (copy vm or migrate) which actually reduce the size is missing in the freeware product. However the datastore browser shows the reduced small size, my purpose is reducing the physical file size.

Thank very much

I recently install Windows 10 as a Guest on one of my ESXi 5.5 host. I then installed the VMware tools. The install seemed to go ok as the drivers for Video, Network, Etc all got updated. However the vSphere client shows that they are not installed. I also seem to have an issue with the machine not being accessible via the network unless I have the console open. It very odd and I have never seen anything like this before.

HI, all!

Has anyone gotten the built-in networking on the Asrock Rack EP2C621D16-4LP working?  The manual says it has 4 x RJ45 GLAN by Marvell 88E1543 (1000Mb/s) and says it's compatible with VMWare® ESXi 6.5 u1.

I've tried with 6.5 u1 and with 6.7.0 and no luck.

When module i40en is loaded, it sees all 4 ethernet ports although none work.  No lights, even.

From what I've read about Marvell, it says I might want to disable i40en and enable qedentv and qedrntv.  I have tried that, no luck.

I'm new at vmware, so I might be missing something basic.

Thanks!

There are insufficient licenses to complete this operation - but why?

Hi Everyone,

I'm a fairly new VMware administrator.  Took over duties from someone who recently left our organization.  I'm familiar with most cloud computing basics (at least in theory), but still getting used to VMware's setup and administration.

We are currently running VMware ESXi 6.5.  (We have the free version.)  I have 5 VMs setup, some with 8 CPU's, some with 4, some with 2, etc  I recently tried to create a new VM with 2 CPUs, and I received the error, "Failed to reconfigure virtual machine [VM Name}. There are insufficient licenses to complete this operation."  I figured I must have reached the limit on the number of CPUs I can use on my current version of VMware.  So I went to one of my other machines that has 8 cores, but definitely doesn't need 8 cores, and I attempted to reduce its number of cores to 4.  But I received the same message.  "Insufficient licences to complete the operation..."

I could understand getting that message when trying to add CPUs to a VM, but I don't know why I'm getting it when removing CPUs from a VM.

I've made sure that my license key is still active.  It says it never expires.  And nothing on the license side has changed.

If anyone has any recommendations on other things I can investigate, I’d greatly appreciate it!

Thanks!
Steve

VMware ESXi 6.7 Driver for Mellanox Technologies MT27500/MT27520 Family

For Mellanox ethernet controller ConnectX-3/ConnectX-3, VMware Knowledge Base describes to use driver "nmlx4_en 3.16.11.10 (6.5 driver) or new releases (6.7 driver)".

The nmlx4_en 3.16.11.10 release is for 6.5 only and can be found at https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/details?downloadGroup=DT-ESXI65-MELLANOX-NMLX4-EN-3161110&productId=614

According https://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=io&details=1&partner=55&releases=485&page=8&display_interval=10&sortColumn=Partner&sortOrder=Asc the MT27500 Family is builtin supported with ESXi 6.7U3 (with a newer release nmlx4_en version 3.17.13.1-1vmw).

As there is no standalone ESXi 6.7 driver, which release for "or new releases (6.7 driver)" is officially supported for ESXi 6.7 non-U3 releases?
